7 films that touched my psychologist’s soul

As a psychologist, psychotherapist and film lover, I have always been fascinated by the way films can explore and reflect the complexities of the human mind and of interpersonal relationships. Here is a very personal selection: my seven favourite films which, in my view, offer deep perspectives on human psychology.

1

Big Fish

A magical journey through the tales of a life, showing how our personal stories shape our reality. As a systemic therapist, I find it fascinating to see how narratives influence our perception of the world.

2

Mr. Nobody

A film that makes us think about life choices and their consequences. It raises essential questions about free will and destiny, central themes in existential psychology.

3

The Fall

A moving exploration of imagination as a means of resilience. This film perfectly illustrates the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

4

En attendant Bojangles

This film (Waiting for Bojangles) deals with madness and unconditional love. It illustrates the importance of acceptance and empathy in relationships, key elements in family therapy.

5

Happiness Therapy

A refreshing look at mental disorders: this film (Silver Linings Playbook) celebrates healing through relationships and human connection, a fundamental aspect of systemic therapy.

6

Juste la fin du monde

This film (It’s Only the End of the World) explores complex family dynamics, highlighting the importance of communication and of what is left unsaid in family relationships.

7

Patch Adams

The inspiring story of a doctor who uses humour and compassion. This film reminds us of the importance of humanity in medicine, an aspect often addressed in person-centred therapies.

Each of these films offers a unique perspective on the themes of life, love, suffering and healing. As a psychologist, I find them not only entertaining but also enriching from a human point of view.

I hope this list will inspire you as much as it has inspired me — I present it in detail in the video below, in French.
