Psychiatry’s worrying problem

The rising number of diagnoses in psychiatry is a subject that worries more and more mental health professionals. I had the privilege of talking with Dr Bogdan Pavlovici to explore this burning issue in depth.

The tide of diagnoses in psychiatry

When we speak of a “tide of diagnoses” in psychiatry, it is important to understand what this really means. Diagnoses, though essential for guiding treatment, can sometimes become a double-edged sword: they can lead to confusion between mental illnesses and symptoms — a fragility that the Rosenhan experiment had already brought to light in its day.

In this exchange, Bogdan Pavlovici and I highlight the fact that the multiplication of diagnoses can sometimes mask the real underlying problems. It is crucial to go beyond the labels to understand the deep causes of mental disorders and symptoms.

Understanding labels in psychiatry

Diagnoses in psychiatry are not to be taken lightly. They are the result of a rigorous assessment, but they need to be interpreted with caution.

Marker

Labels such as depression, anxiety or schizophrenia are only starting points in understanding individual mental health needs.

Bogdan Pavlovici stresses the importance of looking beyond these labels to address difficulties in a holistic way. He draws on his expertise as a psychiatrist to show how a more thorough approach can help build more effective forms of care.

The quest for healthier mental health

Mental health is a complex and constantly evolving field. Instead of letting ourselves be swamped by the tide of diagnoses, we must strive to understand individuals in their entirety: their experiences, their relationships, their environment, and much more. It is, at heart, an invitation to change the way we look at mental health — a call addressed to professionals, researchers and everyone interested in psychology.

The full exchange with Bogdan Pavlovici, rich in leads for more enlightened diagnostic practices, can be watched below, in French.
