Punishment or sanction?
In everyday language, we sometimes tend to treat the terms sanction and punishment as synonyms. Yet there is a fundamental difference between the two. I invite you to explore these concepts together: to define them, see how to tell them apart, and above all reflect on what this distinction can bring to the education we give our children.
To answer this question, I offer you an episode in two parts, each drawing on a different theoretical reading.
Part one · Behaviourism
A conceptualization that surprises by the way it understands the actions through which children build themselves. I do not use it to understand human phenomena, but it seems worth citing, if only for the sake of open-mindedness.
Part two · Systemic approach
My preferred theoretical approach, which I draw on to spell out the distinction I make between sanction and punishment.
