The theme

What if places were part of care?

Space is an often underestimated, even unthought, dimension of therapy. Yet from childhood onwards, our relationship to the world is shaped by the places we inhabit, pass through or avoid. This day brings geography, architecture and topography into psychological and social support, and approaches places as a resource across different settings: the consulting room, the couple, the family, the home.

Three experienced clinicians share their theoretical landmarks, their tools and their clinical vignettes. Gilbert Pregno guides the day as moderator, and each talk is followed by a discussion with the audience.

The question of the day

What do the places of a person, a couple or a family tell us, and how can they become a lever for change?

Space in therapy: a systemic view

    Maurizio Frisina

An interactive walk between theory and practice. Can the identity of a person or a couple be thought of as a set of places over time? How does a symptom change the way we occupy space? What effects do access to nature and movement have on therapy?

Theoretical notions and clinical tools, such as the map of places, help to rethink the environment as a clinical lever, even as a co-therapist: a support that helps patients regain the desire to explore, to play and to create spaces in which to rebuild themselves.

The places of the relationship: a lever in working with couples

    Ivy Daure

The double meaning of the word place, physical and metaphorical, opens new perspectives in clinical work with couples: the places of the relationship help to read what acts as a symptom and what acts as a resource.

With couples, or in individual therapies that deal with the couple, the aim is to explore these new territories, which bring new ways of relating and discoveries about the other and oneself. Physical and metaphorical places become a tool for working with couples.

The power of places in systemic therapy: the experience mapping approach (EMOTH)

    Viola Sallay

An overview of the experience mapping procedure in individual, couple and family therapy. Rooted in environmental psychology, social ecology, attachment theory and family systems thinking, it links emotional self-regulation, relational regulation and family dynamics within the home.

A collaborative visual tool and a “floating object”, the mapping fosters partnership-based therapeutic alliances and gives a voice to the most vulnerable members. Clinical vignettes show how stories of the family home reach back to previous generations, and how the mapping can be combined with the genogram.

Places and their resources in home-based support

    Ivy Daure

For many professionals in health and social care, supporting people and their families in their own homes is part of the job. Going into the home is much more than moving the therapeutic frame: it means working with other rules and other places, set partly by the context and by the host of the house.

The frame is reinvented with the person and their environment. The dynamics of the home, and professionals on the move, help us think about resources differently.
