New release: 'Écrire sa mère' by Dr Robert Neuburger

This week, bookshop shelves welcome a fascinating new work: Écrire sa mère (“Writing one’s mother”), published by Payot and written by Dr Robert Neuburger. This book is not a mere collection of stories: it is an exploration of how writing can serve as a bridge across the turbulent waters of complex mother-child relationships.

In Écrire sa mère, Dr Neuburger offers a fascinating analysis of the life and works of emblematic literary figures such as Annie Ernaux, Nancy Huston, Delphine de Vigan and many others. What unites these authors, beyond their fame, is their use of writing as a way of overcoming wounds marked by a relationship with a mother who was either distant or invasive. Their narratives, sometimes autobiographical, often fictionalised, bear witness to lives in which writing played a cathartic and transformative role.

Curiously, but perhaps not surprisingly, all these authors share similar paths: avid readers in their youth, many of them took refuge in keeping personal diaries, using their imagination to sculpt narratives that not only tell, but heal. Dr Neuburger prefers, in fact, to speak of “emergence” rather than “resilience”: in his view, these writers did not simply overcome their suffering, they sublimated it, transforming painful experiences into literary works that touch readers’ hearts and stand the test of time.

Écrire sa mère is therefore much more than a literary study: it is a mirror held up to our own experience, inviting each of us to reflect on how our earliest relationships shape and influence our creative expressions. Through the pages of this book, Robert Neuburger encourages us to see the art of writing not only as a form of expression, but as a means of personal transformation and healing.

For anyone passionate about literature, psychology or simply the exploration of complex family dynamics, Écrire sa mère promises to be an enriching read. It is available in bookshops (in French).
