Systemic tool · Positive connotation
Until the 1960s, helping a person change seemed to require leading them into self-criticism. What if it were more effective, on the contrary, to focus on the person’s skills and assets rather than on their flaws and dysfunctions?
That is the view that emerged from the 1960s onwards, driven by the therapists of the Palo Alto school. Following on from the episode devoted to confirmation, I explain the technique of positive connotation in systemic therapy, a direct heir of this shift in outlook.
