Brief therapy. Theory of technique

Regina Szprachman de Hubscher sets out her way of working in brief therapy and puts it to the test on a case where everything seemed decided in advance: drugs, delinquency and AIDS. The subtitle states the wager of the book — a theory that states itself as the technique is applied, rather than a theoretical exposition followed by examples.

A case where fate seemed sealed

In this book, the author sets out to convey to the reader her singular way of recreating the essential landmarks of brief therapy. She illustrates it by applying it to a case whose very complex problem “normally” takes on the meaning of a grim fate. A fate that leaves us too on a tightrope, in the image of what she conveys of the client’s experience of the problem she has to face: it involves drugs, delinquency and AIDS, whose presence points to a failure held to be inevitable in the family, in society, and also in psychotherapeutic approaches in general. It is for this reason that the case presented offers an excellent opportunity to get a concrete feel for the therapeutic strategy at work.

The author subtitles her book theory of technique because she considers that rarely, as in this construction, does theory state itself so clearly as the technique is applied.

What the author calls brief therapy

What, then, is brief therapy for her?

1

Working “interactionally”

Starting by working with whoever is suffering from the problem: that is where the levers of change are to be found.

2

Co-constructing the reason for consulting

Taking the client’s complaint and building with them the reason for the consultation, with respect for what they have come looking for.

3

Defining a minimal objective

Enabling the client to formulate an objective to be reached, kept as tight as possible, and working together to obtain it.

4

Revisiting the attempted solutions

Leading the clients to review the attempted solutions that keep the problem going, in order to interrupt the circuit that feeds it back.

5

Steering strategically, then letting go

Steering the sessions towards the client’s objective, accompanying them at a progressively greater distance during the maintenance phase, until both sides let go of each other — by making the client able to face the triggers that might lead to possible relapses.

Who is Regina Szprachman de Hubscher

A family therapist of long experience, she directs the “Centro de Terapias Breves” (Centre for Brief Therapies), where she carries on clinical work, teaching, supervision and research side by side. There she builds clinical settings within a strategic framework based on the MRI model of Palo Alto, integrating into it instrumental resources drawn from the systemic, psychodynamic, cognitive and behavioural fields, from NLP and from psychodrama.
