The self-fulfilling prophecy explained simply

In our ongoing quest to understand the human mind and its interactions, here is a fascinating subject: the self-fulfilling prophecy. This concept, born from the work of sociologists and psychologists, reveals how our beliefs and expectations can shape our reality — with a profound impact on our personal and relational lives.

The concept explained

The self-fulfilling prophecy, a term coined by Robert K. Merton in 1948, describes how a belief or prediction, once stated, can influence behaviour in such a way as to make that belief come true. This idea suggests that our thoughts and beliefs are not mere passive reflections, but active agents that shape our reality.

Key idea

Our beliefs do not simply describe reality: they help produce it.

A systemic reading

Within the systemic approach I am particularly fond of, this concept takes on an even broader dimension. It weaves into the dynamics of family, couple and organisational systems, revealing how the expectations and beliefs within these groups significantly influence the behaviour and well-being of their members. This circularity between beliefs and behaviours lies at the heart of the Palo Alto school and of Paul Watzlawick's work on the logic of communication.

Concrete examples

From parental beliefs that weigh on family dynamics to social stereotypes capable of influencing academic performance, illustrations abound — in everyday life as well as in literature and film. So many examples that make the concept tangible and easy to grasp.

Breaking the cycle

The most captivating aspect of the self-fulfilling prophecy is the possibility of “reprogramming” it. In systemic therapy, we work to transform these limiting beliefs, using techniques such as reframing to bring about positive change.

Psychology, far from being an abstract science, is deeply rooted in our daily lives: the self-fulfilling prophecy is a perfect example, showing just how intertwined psychology and reality are. I hope this exploration will invite you to reflect on your own beliefs and on the way they shape your life.
