Therapist confidences: Isabelle Duret

In this brand-new episode of the Confidences de thérapeutes series, I had the great pleasure of welcoming Isabelle Duret, a renowned systemic family therapist and professor at the Université libre de Bruxelles. A leading figure in the field of systemic therapy, she lets us explore with her her reflections, her experiences and her unique methods.

Isabelle Duret’s inspiring journey

Isabelle tells us about her path through the world of family therapy, from her first inspirations to her current role as a university trainer. She looks back on the challenges she has met as a therapist, in particular the importance of remaining humble and curious in the face of the complexity of families and of the systems in which they evolve.

The imaginary genogram: a tool at the heart of systemic therapy

One of the central points of our exchange is the use of the imaginary genogram, a powerful tool for exploring family relationships from a new angle. Through this creative exercise, derived from the classic genogram, Isabelle guides families through an exploration of their transgenerational heritage, shedding light on the often unconscious dynamics that can influence their behaviours and their well-being.

This work, Isabelle explains, not only makes it possible to better understand family patterns, but also opens new perspectives for overcoming blockages or tensions. It is an approach which, as she puts it, allows family narratives to be rewritten while offering family members the possibility of reconnecting with one another on healthier foundations.

An episode not to be missed

Whether you are a therapist, a psychology student or simply curious to learn more about family dynamics, this episode is a gold mine. Isabelle Duret shares precious advice, striking anecdotes and concrete tools that will enrich your understanding of systemic therapy. The full interview — in French — can be watched below.
