'Help me stay as I am!' The trap of the request in therapy

“Help me change nothing at all!” It may sound surprising, but that is exactly the implicit request of some people when they consult a therapist.

Behind this disconcerting situation lies a central question of the profession: what is the person who consults really asking for? Four types of client requests in therapy can be distinguished. This conceptualisation is that of Yara Doumit; you will find it in her work devoted to the resolutive strategic method.

I present these four types of requests in the video below — in French.
