The 3 phases of the interview
There are certain kinds of learning that make us grow and evolve in a dynamic of continuous growth, and others that represent an almost instantaneous qualitative leap. I don’t know whether you have ever felt this sensation: learning something that marks a breaking point between a before and an after. The one I am presenting here was, for me, one of those.
Surprising as it may seem, I find that we are given rather little training, in the initial training of psychologists, in interview techniques strictly speaking. Of course, we come out with a heavy theoretical baggage, but with not much that is functional for starting to practise therapy.
So I suggest we start with the basics, namely the different phases of the interview. Keep in mind that not all theoretical approaches propose the same thing: these three stages are found mainly in systemically oriented therapies, and in particular in the strategic current.
