Am I an adult with ADHD? Understanding and organising everyday life

Why am I so impulsive? Why, despite my efforts, does my work fall apart, and why is it so hard to keep the promises I make to myself? These are questions an adult rarely asks out loud. Estrella Joselevich moves into adulthood a field until then centred on children and adolescents, and offers a reading of attention deficit disorder that runs from differential diagnosis to strategies for everyday life.

Book ¿Soy un adulto con AD/HD? Comprensión y estrategias para la vida cotidiana, Estrella Joselevich, Paidós, 296 pagesReview by Red Sistémica (Claudio Des Champs)Translation Complexe Systémique, with the permission of Red Sistémica

What can be done in order not to “explode” so easily? Where does this permanent restlessness come from? Is it a biological matter, or are these psychological difficulties? These are the questions of any adult who perceives in himself difficulties of attention and an impulsiveness, and who lives his interpersonal ties in conflict. In this book they find a considered answer.

A great deal of information has circulated in recent years about attention deficit with or without hyperactivity, but it has had children and adolescents as its main focus: it is indeed in learning that the features of the disorder show themselves most clearly. Once that focus has been properly illuminated, the time comes to shift it towards adults. Many of them have gone through a large part of their lives without knowing what they were suffering from, while nonetheless suffering its effects: poor performance at work, impulsive conduct in decision-making, damaged self-esteem, marital dysfunction, frequent difficulties with their children — in short, the impossibility of carrying through projects and activities with a satisfying quality of life.

On the basis of information and of an accurate diagnosis, however, there is a great deal that can be done. That is what the book sets out to show, taking up the different aspects of the life of the adult concerned.

Contents of the book

  • Part one — a description of the symptoms and of their course; an analysis of the disorders that can be confused with ADHD or be associated with it (anxiety, depression, bipolarity, etc.) and markers for differential diagnosis.
  • Part two — the way the syndrome affects everyday life: social relations, life as a couple, family.
  • Part three — the path to diagnosis.
  • Part four — a multimodal form of help, adjusted to each person’s own characteristics and needs: information on the relevant medication, psychotherapies that are genuinely useful, and strategies for organising oneself better, mastering time, preventing excessive emotional reactions, tolerating frustration.

Who it is for

For adults who recognise themselves in these difficulties as much as for the therapists who receive them. The book is written to be readable by the person concerned, without giving up clinical precision: this is what makes it usable in the consulting room, particularly when the request comes from the couple or the family rather than from the person themselves.
