Neutrality in therapy: deconstructing a myth?

The therapist's neutrality is a much-debated topic in the field of therapy. Is it truly attainable? Is it even desirable? These crucial questions are at the heart of the exchange I am sharing here.

A narrative look at neutrality

To explore this subject, I talk with Charlie Crettenand, a psychologist-psychotherapist specialising in systemic and narrative approaches. Charlie holds an M.Sc. in psychology and trains professionals at the Trame Narrative practice. Charlie's commitment as a queer, eco-lucid artivist further enriches this perspective on the profession. With in-depth training in the narrative practices initiated by White and Epston, Charlie brings a deep, enlightened reflection on the question of neutrality in therapy.

From neutrality to commitment

In our discussion, we explore how the notion of neutrality can be revisited, and how the therapist's commitment can benefit the therapeutic process. We also address the implications of this reflection for training in psychology and social work. An exploration that challenges conventional notions and paves the way for a more nuanced, humanistic understanding of therapy, of its ethical and deontological bearings and of the stance of those who practise it.
